Monitor Light Bars: Are They Worth the Hype?
What You Are Actually Paying For
Four monitor light bars dominate the 2026 market, and they span a 4.5x price gap: the Baseus i-wok at around $40, the Quntis ScreenLinear at around $50, the BenQ ScreenBar Plus at around $110, and the BenQ ScreenBar Halo at around $180. All four sit on the top bezel, weigh 300 to 500 grams, draw 5 W over USB, and use the same core trick: an asymmetric lens that throws light down onto the desk at roughly a 40 degree angle so none of it hits the screen. The hardware is nearly identical. What the extra $140 buys is color accuracy, an ambient light sensor, and a controller you do not have to reach behind the monitor to touch.

Baseus i-wok (~$40): The Value Pick
The i-wok nails the fundamentals. Its asymmetric optics keep the screen glare-free just as well as the BenQ, and at full brightness it pushes past 500 lux on a keyboard 20 inches away. Two knocks against it: a CRI around 83 means colors on printed pages and physical samples look slightly muted, and the touch controls live on the bar itself, so every brightness change means reaching over the top of your monitor. Color temperature spans 3000 to 6500K in three fixed steps rather than a smooth dial. For a second monitor or a budget build, it is genuinely good enough and frees up $140 for a monitor arm or a better chair.
Quntis ScreenLinear (~$50): The Middle Ground
The Quntis lands between the Baseus and the BenQ. Its CRI of roughly 90 renders skin tones and paper more faithfully than the i-wok, and the aluminum housing feels a step up from the Baseus plastic. It still uses on-bar touch controls and lacks an ambient sensor, so it does not auto-dim as the room changes. The color temperature range is slightly narrower at 2900 to 6000K, which matters only if you want the very warm 2700K setting for late-evening work. At $50 it is the safe choice for anyone who wants better light than the cheapest option without paying BenQ money.

Both carry an ambient light sensor that measures room brightness and auto-dims the bar to hold the desk near 500 lux, so the light stays steady as afternoon sun fades. The Plus uses a wired desktop dial that sits next to your keyboard: one push cycles auto-brightness, twisting sets color temperature across 2700 to 6500K. The Halo adds a wireless dial (no cable to route), a rear-facing bias backlight built into the bar, and a wider clamp that grips bezels from 0.4 cm up to 4.2 cm, which is the reason it fits thin-bezel and slightly curved panels the others cannot. If you already own a separate bias light, the Halo backlight is redundant and the Plus is the smarter buy at $70 less.
Who Should Buy One, and Who Should Not
A light bar earns its keep if your desk is smaller than 120 cm wide (no room for a lamp base), if you work after dark and get screen glare from a lamp, or if you want a clean minimal surface. It reclaims the roughly 15 by 15 cm of desk a lamp foot eats. It is the wrong tool if you need to light your face for video calls (a bar lights the desk, not you), if you do color-critical print or photo work that demands a dedicated CRI 98 task lamp, or if you want one light for reading, crafts, and screen work, where an adjustable arm lamp is more flexible.
Power, Mounting, and Pairing
Every bar here is USB-powered and pulls about 5 W, well under the 4.5 W a USB-A 2.0 port guarantees, so any monitor USB port, hub, or laptop port runs one without a wall adapter. That also means the bar switches off with the monitor if it feeds from the screen USB port, which is convenient but ties its brightness to the display being awake. Installation takes under a minute: the counterweighted clamp hangs over the top bezel with no tools and no adhesive, and the whole unit lifts off when you move desks. The clamp holds by gravity plus a rubber lip, so a bezel shallower than 1 cm or a screen tilted past about 25 degrees can let it slide.
Whatever bar you pick, pair it with a rear bias light. A 10 dollar USB LED strip run around the back of the panel raises the wall luminance behind the screen, cuts the contrast between a bright display and a dark wall, and reduces perceived eye strain in a dim room. The BenQ Halo folds this into the bar; with the other three you add the strip separately. For most people the $50 Quntis ScreenLinear is the sweet spot: CRI near 90, solid build, and glare control that matches bars costing twice as much. Buy the Baseus i-wok at $40 only for a secondary screen where color fidelity does not matter. Step up to the BenQ ScreenBar Plus at $110 if you read physical documents daily and want the desktop dial and auto-dimming, and reserve the $180 Halo for thin-bezel or lightly curved monitors, or for anyone who wants the built-in bias backlight in one unit. The honest summary: the cheap bars deliver about 90 percent of the experience, and the BenQ premium is real but incremental, not transformative.
